The Power of Keeping in Touch
February 26, 2017
Roughly every six months or so I give my old coworkers a call. From old bosses to juniors I have trained. To keep in touch. To say Hi. To see what they are up to. Some of them I am lucky enough to call friends. Some of them I have not seen in years.
I literally pick up the phone and call. Not text. Not shoot off an email. But call.
And no matter what the situation, the calls always feature some catch up. Some life lesson that I share. And some that my colleagues share. I get a lay of the land and anopportunity to see what is going on in the business.
I don't do this for financial gain. I don't do this because I have to.
I do it to see what folks are working on across the country. What accounts are interesting and what has stagnated? What is the latest in their personal life? I do it to hear about births and deaths and marriages and divorces.
I do it because I care.
So as you read this perhaps you can think of someone you have lost touch with. Someone you have thought about recently. Go ahead and pick up the phone.
You're only going to meet so many people over your career. You might as well make it count.
